Adult soccer league or single games: which fits you
By the Poteau Team · updated

IN SHORT
A league means a team, a schedule and the same night every week for the season, while a single game means playing when you can, promising nothing. On Poteau in France, more than 8 in 10 player-run games are created less than 48 hours before kickoff. If your schedule moves, go single games. If you have a steady team and want standings, join a league.
What a league asks of you
An adult league runs a full season. You register a team, the schedule comes out, and game days are set long before.
What you get: standings, opponents on the schedule, a team that knows each other. What you give: the same slot every week, and friends who all have to show up.
A single game is the opposite
On Poteau, player-run games get created late. These numbers come from games in France.
Created | Share of games |
|---|---|
Less than 14 hours before kickoff | Half |
Less than 24 hours before | 2 in 3 |
Less than 48 hours before | More than 8 in 10 |
Less than 3 days before | 9 in 10 |
A weeknight game is usually posted 10 hours ahead. Nothing on Monday for Thursday? Normal. You don't book a season, you look the same day.
What it costs
No registration. You pay for your spot, game by game. On weekdays, expect about €8 in the afternoon and €11 in the evening. One night a week is close to €50 a month, and you stop whenever you want. Prices seen on Poteau. In person, a venue may do things differently.
98% of the time, you pay on site. Prices by hour and by venue are in how much a 5-a-side costs.
Will the game happen?
This is the real price of freedom. In a league, game day is on the schedule. With single games, enough people have to sign up.
With 2 players signed up, the game is played almost 8 times in 10. With 5, more than 9 times in 10. On weeknights, only 1 game in 10 still has an open spot at kickoff, so they fill fast.
Level
In a league you play with your team, so at its level. With single games you meet new people. Almost every game shows its expected level, from 1 to 10. Close to 1 game in 5 welcomes levels 1 to 4.

What about 7v7?
On public fields, close to 8 games in 10 are set up for 14 players or more, and 9 in 10 are free. See free soccer courts near me.
How to choose
You already know 8 to 10 reliable players: league.
You want standings and a real season: league.
Your schedule changes every week: single games.
You have no team: single games, with no team.
You're coming back after a break: single games, to test the pace.
Nothing stops you doing both: the league on Wednesday, a single game when you want more.
