Free soccer courts: finding one near you

IN SHORT

A public soccer court is usually free, with no booking: you show up and play. To find the closest one, search "soccer court" or "multi-sport court" in your maps app. In France, search "city stade", or look up the town on Data ES, the official sports facility census. The hard part is having enough players. In France, on Poteau, nearly 9 in 10 player-run games at public fields are free. And you can join one without knowing anyone.

What a "city stade" is

In France it's called a city stade. Think of a small fenced multi-sport court: mini goals, basketball hoops, turf or asphalt. The town runs it.

No booking, no membership. First come, first served.

It's sized for 4v4 or 5v5. For bigger games you need a town stadium or a sports park, sometimes open to the public at set hours.

Finding a free court near you

  • Your maps app. Search "soccer court", "multi-sport court", or "city stade" in France. Check the recent photos: the surface makes all the difference.

  • Your town's website. Hours and rules. Some close at night. At others, schools get the court during the day.

  • In France, Data ES (equipements.sports.gouv.fr). The official census of sports facilities, town by town.

Where the free games are

These are French figures. On Poteau, one in four player-run games is free. And two in three of those free games are played at a public field: city stade, town stadium, sports park.

One in five player-run games is played at a public field. Nearly 9 in 10 are free there. When there's a fee, it's usually €4 per player. A 5v5 game at a center runs €10.

And it's not just Paris. Players run free games at the Plaine des Jeux de Gerland in Lyon. Also at Stade Gilles-Joye in Éguilles, near Aix-en-Provence, and Stade Melbourne in Tourcoing, near Lille.

Court or full field

It's not the same game. At public fields in France, 8 in 10 games run on Poteau are 7v7 or bigger. The most common is 8v8. 5v5 isn't even one game in six.

So: ten players, the court is enough. Sixteen, go for the stadium.

On a busy court: small teams, short games, and often winner stays on. If you show up alone, ask who's got next.

When to go

Nearly half of games at public fields are on the weekend. Saturday and Sunday, mostly in the morning.

On weekdays, it's evenings, after work. Check for lights: not every court has them, and in winter it gets dark early.

Going without knowing anyone

The field is rarely the problem. Having enough players is.

On Poteau, almost every game at a public field is open to anyone. One in three needs only one or two more players. You see the price (often €0), the open spots and who's signed up.

The organizer's number is on their profile before the game. Handy for finding the right field in a big park.

Nothing near you? Start your own at your local court, for €0. With two players signed up, a game is played 8 times in 10.
